Glycine is so amazing - has dozens of benefits!!!

Glycine is so amazing - has dozens of benefits, so I started adding the powder to my daily protein shakes. Here are just a few reasons I take it - helps joints, calms my brain, helps sleep, helps to repair the gut, and balances blood sugar and energy levels. I have little jars and I put the powder in the jars so I can have them in my kitchen right near my blender. I score and break off the end of a plastic spoon and leave it inside the jar so it's real easy to add the powders to my shake in the morning. So far I have several BULK Supplement powders that I have in jars and add to my shake. Some powders I add each time (like Glycine, citrulline, TMG, magnesium, tryptophan, pomegranate & MSM), some only if I'm especially stressed or fighting a cold. I also have several powders that I mix to make a formula for Joints & Soft Tissue (GLYCINE included). I usually mix a two-week amount, and have it in a bigger jar, so a spoon of that is the equivalent of very expensive Joint Supplements, and I can adjust the ratios based on my needs (a scale helps alot). Using these powders has saved me money for sure, which is really great, and I take fewer capsules, but more importantly I am able to adjust dosages directly for my needs. (Some of the Bulk Supplement powders I put in capsules for travel, or put into oils (fractionated coconut, Vit E, jojoba) for topical use - another jar...)

3rd ingredient in glutathione booster

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of taking glutathione as a supplement and so prefer to consume boosters/ In a basic formula, I use 2 parts NAC, 2 parts Glutamine, and 1 part Glycine to make a DIY glutathione booster. I have a more complex formula that I am currently using with 2 additional ingredients [the priciest being the R-ALA]. I mix up the following and encapsulate: N-Acetyl Cysteine 115 g, L-Gluatmine 45 g, L-Glycine 25 g, R-ALA 30 g, L-Carnitine 50 g. This updated blend costs me less than 60$ for all ingredients, but will last around a half a year.

Great price/good supplement, but DON"T USE IN COPPER CONTAINERS

Bulk supplements is consistently my favorite brand for, well, bulk supplements. Glycine is great for me because I benefit from methylation boosters and glutathione replenishing supplements, and the supplement even tastes good (a bit sweet, unlike other amino acids like arginine which taste ungodly).

That being said, I had a DANGEROUS ACCIDENT which could have been much worse because of a chemical reaction of glycine which I was not aware of.

I added the glycine, which I normally drink from a normal glass cup, to a copper flask (for no specific reason) at night. A bit always precipitates because it is not entirely soluble in water. The next morning I had some water from the flask and it was just slightly BITTER AND METALLIC. After drinking a fair amount I got nauseous, almost vomited and had a bad headache for 3 hours. I looked back in the cup and saw BLUE SALTS at the bottom, and when I added water it became weakly blue. That's when I realized that glycine reacts with copper at room temperature overnight to form COPPER GLYCINATE; which in itself is not highly toxic but can easily expose you to an extreme excess of copper.

Realizing that I could have consumed as much as 1-2g of copper based on the amount of glycine I had originally, I called poison control and went 24 hours later to an urgent care to get my liver/kidney function tested. Luckily they were fine, but it was a scare and I do still feel a it off. It may have been partly that this was a low quality copper flask without proper anti-leeching coating, but in general PLEASE AVOID TAKING GLYCINE OUT OF ANYTHING COPPER (probably anything metallic just to be safe).

Sweet! Literally.

I'm so glad to be able to order pure supplement powders without any fillers. And glycine is an easy one to just take on a spoon, as it tastes almost like sugar with a clean aftertaste.

Edited to add: If you're curious about the benefits of glycine, Dr. Joel Brind recently wrote some excellent articles about it for Matt Stone's 180 Degree blog. I recommend reading "Diet and Inflammation Part 4." The comments are interesting as well.

Good stuff.

I tried the glycine powder to help with my panic disorder and to help sleep. I haven't slept deeper in a long time without medications. I take a half teaspoon in my tea before bedtime and sleep very deeply all night long. That is the key for me - all night long. Taken at lunch time, I could definitely feel calmer and my heart rate slowed and I did not have to take a benzodiazepam like usual. I love that it is pure with no fillers and all I have read about glycine says that it is effective and has nearly NO side effects. Amazing.

Menopausal Sleeplessness

Take a rounded teaspoon of this with my CALM magnesium and filtered water about a half an hour before bed. It helps with those cant turn off the brain at 3am moments, and I fall asleep faster. Strange how I used to be the best sleeper, then boom... hormonal imbalance and everything is off around the same time as menopause kicked in. This actually helps, when so many supplements did nothing but drain the wallet.
